Moving Checklist

You want to your next move to be as effortless as possible right? So try using this helpful moving checklist:

Six Weeks Before Your Move:
  • Objectively review the items you own and decide what can be sold or thrown out. If you're using a moving service, more weight equals more cost.
  • If you have a significant number of items that can be sold, consider holding a garage sale.
  • Create a central filing system to organize all of your moving-related documents.
  • Depending on your reason for moving, some of your expenses may be deductible so keep all receipts.
  • Create a floor plan of your new home and begin considering where you'll place your possessions.
Four Weeks Before Your Move:
  • Contact the post office to initiate a change of address. Update your subscriptions and notify credit card companies as well as friends and family of your change of address.
  • Schedule service termination with the utility companies (gas, water, electricity, telephone, cable company). Plan to have services disconnected the day after your move.
  • Schedule service connection with the utility companies in your new location. Arrange to start service one day before your move.
  • Perform any necessary repairs on your old home and arrange for professional services (i.e. cleaning, landscaping, painting, electrical and plumbing) for your new home.
  • If you're packing, start packing infrequently used or non-essential items.
  • As you pack, remember to put heavier items into smaller boxes and lighter items in larger boxes.
  • If you have planned to hold a garage sale, schedule it for at least one week prior to your move and consider advertising options.
Three Weeks Before Your Move:
  • If you're packing, start packing as many items as possible. Remember to label the contents of each carton.
  • Contact your doctors, dentist and veterinarian to receive copies of medical records and pet vaccination records.
  • If necessary, make travel arrangements (flights, hotel, rental cars, etc.) for your trip to your new home.
  • Start grocery shopping with the intent of using up anything you buy. Perishable foods cannot be transported.
  • Contact your children's schools to arrange for the transfer of records to your new school district.
  • Secure a safety deposit box in your new town and make arrangements to safely transfer items from your old safety deposit box.
  • Hold your garage sale now.
Two Weeks Before Your Move:
  • Contact your insurance company to cancel or transfer coverage to your new home.
  • Make arrangements for transporting your pets and houseplants.
  • Contact your bank to cancel/change/transfer your accounts.
  • Transfer all prescriptions to a pharmacy in your new town.
  • Cancel newspaper subscriptions and delivery service.
  • If you plan to drive to your new home, have your automobile serviced (oil change, tires rotated, etc.)
One Week Before Your Move:
  • Clean up your front and back yards - mow your lawn for the last time.
  • Dispose of flammable, toxic, and corrosive items that can't be moved.
  • Drain the gas and oil from gas-powered tools such as lawn mowers and weed-whackers.
  • Identify and pack all the items that are going with you and not the moving truck.
  • Pay all outstanding bills and be sure to indicate your new address on payment receipts.
  • Remove any fixtures or window-treatments that you are taking with you.
One To Two Days Before Your Move:
  • The movers will arrive to start the packing process.
  • Empty and defrost your refrigerator and freezer.
  • Verify the delivery schedule and arrange for payment to the moving company.
  • Empty your safety deposit box.
  • Plan to take important documents, valuable jewelry and collectibles, family photos/movies, and critical computer data with you instead of letting the moving company transport them.
  • Give the driver clear directions to your new home and provide the new phone number and include phone numbers where you can be reached in transit.
  • If your old house will be sitting vacant, notify police and neighbors.
Moving Day:
  • When the movers arrive, review all details and paperwork. Accompany the driver while taking inventory.
  • Give the home a final cleaning or arrange for someone to perform this service the day after moving out.
Move-In Day:
  • Unpack your car.
  • Review your floor plan to refresh your memory about where you want furniture and appliances placed.
  • Check to make sure the utilities have been connected, and follow up on any delays.
  • Confine your pets to an out-of-the-way room to help keep them from running away or getting frightened by the unfamiliar surroundings and all the activity.
  • Plan to be present when the movers arrive and be prepared to pay before unloading.
  • Check the inventory as items are unloaded and direct the movers on where to place items.
  • Unpack only what you need for the first two days and give yourself a couple weeks to completely unpack and organize.
There you have it. A lot things to consider and tasks to complete, but if you follow the checklist and do your best to stay on schedule, you'll find that it's not as difficult as it may seem and that your move will be relatively stress-free.
