Packing Tips
|
Recommended Materials and Supplies:
- Cartons: in various sizes and designed specifically for their contents
- Packing Paper: in some cases newspaper may be fine but be aware the newsprint tends to rub off
- Bubble Wrap, Tissue, Styrofoam Peanuts: for packing fragile or delicate items
- Packing Tape: ideally, plastic tape that is 2 inches wide and useable with a tape roller
- Markers: such as a Sharpie for writing the contents and destination room on the carton
- Scissors or "razor knife"
General Packing Tips:
- Give yourself plenty of time to pack so items will be organized at their destination
- Pack one room at a time starting with the contents of the least used room in your house
- Use smaller cartons for heavier contents and larger boxes for lighter contents
- Use enough packing paper, bubble-wrap, tissue to adequately protect delicate items
- Make sure all of the carton's openings (especially the bottom) are well taped to hold the contents
- Label each carton with contents and the placement of the carton at its destination
The following items are classified as dangerous or hazardous and cannot be transported:
- Flammable / Corrosive / Explosive Items
- Aerosol Cans / Cleaning Solvents
- Bleach / Ammonia-Based Products
- Car Batteries / Electronic Device Batteries
- Charcoal / Charcoal Lighter Fluid
- Fertilizer / Weed Killer / Pesticide / Poison
- Gasoline / Kerosene / Lamp Oil / Motor Oil
- Loaded Firearms / Ammunition
- Matches / Fireworks / Flares / Lighters
- Paint / Paint Thinner
- Pool Chemicals
- Pressurized Tanks / BBQ Propane Tanks
- Frozen Foods / Refrigerated Foods / Produce
- Containers of Unused Perishable Food
- House Plants / Patio Plants or Trees
The following items should be packed and transported by you instead of by the moving company:
- Moving / Rental / Mortgage Documents
- Deeds / Wills / Insurance Paperwork
- Cash / Checks / Securities
- Valuable Collectibles
- Jewelry
- Coins / Stamp collections
- Family Photographs / Videos / DVDs
- Furs
